The State of Michigan is one of the most populous state in the US with more than 9 million residents. The cities in Great Lake State include Detroit, Flint, Livonia, Warren, Grand Rapids, and Lansing as its capital. You can find an approved EMT training in Michigan in one of those cities.

The Michigan Dept. of Community Heath Emergency Medical Services Section (MDCH EMS) is responsible for giving licenses to EMTs and Paramedics in Michigan as well as ambulances and other emergency vehicles.

There are several levels of emergency medical care provider in Michigan which include:

EMT Training Schools in Michigan

 EMT Training Requirements in Michigan

You must be 18 years old or older to take any EMT training course in Michigan. Other requirements include:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Proof of immunity to MMR & Varicella
  • Proof of immunity to HepB
  • Negative TB test

And other lab tests may be required. Other schools recommend that you have previous knowledge in anatomy, physiology, biology, and chemistry. You should also be aware that criminal convictions and some driving violations may prevent you from being licensed.

The course will teach you to recognize signs and symptoms of illness and traumatic injuries. The EMT training course will take a minimum of 162 hours in the classroom and 32 of clinical internship hours from emergency room and ambulance. The course should prepare you respond in emergencies and provide on-scene treatment, stabilization, and transport of patients. You will learn:

Expect the course to cost you around $800 to more that a few thousand depending on the approved EMT training program.

Completing the approved EMT course makes you eligible to take the NREMT exam and apply for the Emergency Medical Technician license in the state of Michigan.

Michigan EMT State Licensure

You can get an EMT license in Michigan by completing the approved EMT course and passing the NREMT examination within two years. You need to complete a new course if the date is beyond the two year period. Michigan uses the NREMT written and practical exam in their licensure since 2001 for examination purposes only. If you are licensed in another state and have completed the NREMT exam, you can apply for reciprocity in Michigan.

You can apply for licensure anytime after you have successfully completed the EMT training in Michigan. Your application will be complete once the state received verification of your course completion from the program sponsor and verified that you have passed the National Registry of EMT exams.

You must renew your license every three years by taking 36 hours of continuing education courses which must include 7 hours of practical training and then submitting the certificate with your current CPR card.
