There is a great demand for EMT and Paramedic in large and highly populated areas like New York. There are a number of schools offering EMT training in New York for the original EMT courses, refresher courses, and advanced courses. The schedule for EMT training course in New York  vary for each school during spring, summer, and fall.

There are different EMS Levels of certification offered in New York State by the Department of Health namely:

  • Certified First Responder (CFR)
  • Emergency Medical Technician – Basic (EMT-B)
  • Advanced Emergency Medical Technician – Intermediate (AEMT-I)
  • Advanced Emergency Medical Technician – Critical Care (AEMT-CC)
  • Advanced Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic (AEMT-P)

EMT Training Schools in New York City

Below are some of the approved schools in New York City that offer EMT Basic Training. Most of these schools can be found in Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island.

There are quite a number of schools in every county so you shouldn’t have any problem finding one in your area.

EMT Training for New York Requirements

In general, it is required for EMT students to be at least 18 years old, can read, write, and communicate in English, and meet the demanding physical requirements of being an EMT. While others also require for proof of immunization for Measles, Mumps & Rubella, Hepatitis B & current PPD, a High School Diploma or a recognized G.E.D, and complete an interview. You can still take the EMT course even if you have a criminal conviction but the case must be reviewed and may delay or prevent your certification.

You can expect the course to take about 3-5 Months or more and the tuition to cost about $875 – $1100 or more. Most require you to pay in full but some offer other payment options.

New York EMT Basic Course Curriculum

The course include didactic and practical training in the following modules:
Preparatory – Introduction, well-being, medical/legal and ethical issues, human body, baseline Vital Signs and sample History, and lifting and moving patients
Airway
CPR – cardiac arrest and CPR, circulation
Patient Assessment – Scene size-up, initial assessment, history and physical Exam, communications, documentation
Medical/Behavioral Emergencies and Obstetrics/Gynecology – General pharmacology, respiratory, cardiovascular, environmental, and behavioral emergencies, diabetes/ altered mental status, allergies, poisoning/overdose, obstetrics/gynecology
Trauma – Bleeding and shock, soft tissue injuries, musculoskeletal care, injuries to the head and spine
Infants and Children
Ambulance Operations

There’s also clinical rotations on emergency department or ambulance required for a set period of time.

EMT Basic NYS Certification

After you have successfully completed the course, you will be eligible to take the NYS Department of Health EMT Basic Certification Exam. Passing the certification exam will get you a certification which is good for three years.
