New Jersey is the most densely populated state with more than 8 million people in the US. It’s a great place to be in if you’re looking for a career in the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) field. There are some differences in EMT training in New Jersey compared to other states in terms of the requirements and some other things. According to statistics, it is also one of the wealthiest state based on household income. There are several large cities in New Jersey which means more opportunities for EMS providers. These large cities include New Ark, Jersey City, Paterson, Elizabeth, Edison, and Woodbridge Township.

There are only two main levels of EMT training in New Jersey namely EMT Basic and EMT Paramedic. The state of New Jersey also uses their own certification exam handled by the New Jersey OEMS and moved away from the NREMT certification. The New Jersey OEMS maintains the certification of EMT-B’s and EMT-P’s and also provides licences to emergency vehicles likes ambulances, mobile ICUs, and air medical units.

EMT Training in New Jersey Requirements

EMT training in New Jersey requires you to at least be at 16 years of age which is younger than other states while paramedics are required to be at least 19 years old. CPR is also a prerequisite which means you should have completed a cardiopulmonary resuscitation or CPR course for healthcare providers before enrolling in any EMT training program in New Jersey.

Before you enroll in any school, be sure to check if their EMT training program is approved by the state. The training complies with the US Dept. of Transportation guidelines. The skills that you’ll acquire after completing the EMT training course include patient assessment, airway management techniques, vital signs, automated defibrillator, cardiac arrest management, trauma management skills, including cervical spine stabilization, management of bleeding and shock, back boarding, and splinting techniques.

EMT training in the state New Jersey for volunteers has the option to get their tuition reimbursed by the state through the EMT Training Fund if the organization is eligible.

The EMT training course will take about 120 hours to complete with 110 hours of classroom training and practice and 10 hours of hospital emergency department or ambulance observation time. That’s approximately 3 months with classes 2 nights a week and a weekend.

New Jersey State EMT Certification

Completing the EMT training in NJ will allow you to sit for the certification exam. The certification in New Jersey is now good for 5 years which was extended from 3 years since January 2010 and must be renewed after that.

Re-certification requires you to pass a 48 hours worth of continuing education program or CEUs approved by the state. You must earn 24 core CEU course credits from an approved refresher course and others from other medical training programs like pediatric emergencies, water rescue, and recreational drug emergencies to complete a 24 credit hours worth of elective.
